Fashion Magazine Editorials

I have picked this editorial because it is one of the only one of my choices that has colour. The use of asymetric shapes and light substance of colour caught my attention. The look of the editorial has a retro feel and the choice of image is striking as it is a head shot with a detailed feature on the neck line.

This next editorial I have picked because it has a fresh look to it, using a white background with light opacity images looks professional. The topic written about has a link to the ‘R’ in the centre of the left page, what really interests me about this is the image that has been placed into the letter.

This part of a magazine editorial inspired me to use their technique of a long image going across the page diagonally. The writing has been placed around the image to give it shape and structure,  I will use an image that links to the topic of my editorial and re-create this.

This editorial I have found is a spread over 4 pages, I chose to discuss this because of the collage effect with the images. As the images are cut in abstract ways the text is also very similar in the way it curves and slants. However this process could take a while on Photoshop.

I am intrigued by this editorial not for the writing but the images used, the layering of images over other images is something I will consider when making my own editorial. I like the font used for the title, how it looks written with water colour on the page.

Fashion Illustrators who influence my work

Tanya Ling
Born in Calcutta in 1966, her childhood was spent in America, Africa and England. She presented an exhibition of her own drawings that led to her first commission as a fashion illustrator for British vogue. Since then Ling has contributed to leading fashion titles throughout the world and made work for clients such as Louis Vuitton, Selfridges and Frieze Art Fair. Tanya Ling’s illustrations stimulate my ideas to create quick sketched illustrations as her work is not completely accurate yet it works.

Andrea Benson
Andrea Benson works and lives in in Portland, Oregon. Her art background includes work in drawing, printmaking, photography, and ceramics, paper-making and sewing. Putting her hands onto material and manipulating it is how she works. She begins her work with a simple drawing and uses the thickness and depth of the line to alter the dynamics of the picture. Interestingly to me Andrea Benson’s work includes all techniques that are of notice to me. Print work is an effective, easy way that she makes her work look professional quick and efficiently.

Erin Petson
Erin Petson, a British artist and illustrator that has achieved international praise with her immediately recognisable artworks. Her genuine love of drawing and mark making comes through all her pieces which are both delicate and provocative. I like Erin Petson’s work because she uses light mark making to not disturb her drawing but this adds movement to her designs.

 Thomas Brookes
Searching through Pinterest I found this illustration drawn by Thomas Brookes, who recently showed his SS14 collection at Graduate Fashion Week in London. He graduated with a BA in Fashion Design from Bath Spa University. He discovered long forgotten objects and mementoes in the attic of his family home, among them a box of motorcycle trophies. Brookes transposed the draped silhouettes of these trophies onto garments while divesting the objects of personal meaning. I think that Thomas Brooks’ designs are imaginative and creative I like the use of black ink on white paper and the contrast of red which acts upon his upbringing such as the death of his father.

Trend Board Inspiration

This first trend is of great ore to me because of the tones. This is not exactly the colour that I would use on my own trend board however; I will definitely consider a green tone. I like the layout of this and the fact that there are only 8 photos which goes to show that less is more.

For the next theme I was looking more at the colour palette when I chose it, I also like that there isn’t just fashion images on the trend board to show the trend. On the board patterns and homeware has been used also to show where the trend may be seen or may occur.

The last trend board I picked was this one colour tone board. This board is not like any others I have seen as it only hold two images. However, the images on this board are very strong and show a clear colour palette as there is also swatches next to the images to show the shades that would be used for this trend. The board also had a title including a colour tone used.

Mood Board Inspiration

This mood board has inspired me because I like that it has been given a colour palette that has been stuck to throughout. There is a chart that shows the tonal range. Looking closer at the images I can see that their own personal drawings have been used to extend use of primary research. The opacity has been changed on some of the images so some images can be layered.

This next mood board has encouraged me to experiment on Photoshop using my own sketches or layering an outline of images over another image. I will try to keep the images on my mood board very minimal like this example.

I have picked this mood board as I think it gives the impression of a scrap- book. I am not particularly interested in the images on the board but the layout is something I would use in my own work. The raw edges on the images and the placement has given the effect of doing the mood board by hand, this is something I would consider.

My reason for choosing this board is because I like that designs / figures have been drawn on the board in a geometric way. The use of pattern behind the images is useful to me because my personal mood board will need to have pattern on it because of my FMP theme.

I have chosen this next mood board as I am intrigued by the repetition of the print. The print has been used throughout to increase that attention of it. There is an illustration that has been created to show the designers ideas and concepts.

This other mood board is much like the one above with its use of continuing pattern. I like the colour palette and tones used on this board; everything goes. Overlapping and changing the opacity is something I will consider in my own mood board.

I have been drawn to this mood board from its simplicity and the minimalist feel it has. The digital illustration that has been formed is the main statement image; plain images have been used behind it to make sure the attention stays on the illustration.

Photoshoot Ideas - Photoshop

I have chosen this image as I feel that I could manipulate the image to fit my theme. Instead of the image being so bright and fun I could make use of the blue colour that relates to my theme. This could be a quick and easy way to make the photo effective.

This image has inspired me because another photo has been worked in to the silhouette of a taken photograph. This has had an impact on my own work because it imitates the theme of the overall project and my garment. I may choose to add colour to the image to liven it up and create a fun image instead of the image looking so serious.

The image chosen here is not necessarily linked to the theme of my photoshoot however once the image has been taken I could possibly layer the colour (smoke) over my picture.

Carrying on with the layering topic, I have chosen to research more; like this image of two different photos of the same person merged in to one. This does link to my theme as it almost gives the illusion of a transparency. Transparency is what I tries to focus on in the making of my garment so I think this could work really well.

This image shows a definite transformation, the technique could be used in many different places and contexts. From this image I wouldn’t initially use the location or colors however, the actual use of Photoshop within the image is very inventive. I could take my photograph up against something that links to my theme e.g. Rocks/ Mountains, Waterfalls and then use this skill to create an effective photo.

These images have a very minimalist feel as there is no colour or brightness to distract ones eye from the simplicity of the photo. The contrast of light and dark is effective and makes a bold statement. The image is very neat and arranged in a way that is creative, the fact that you cannot see the models face makes it more mysterious. This links to my Earthy Minerals theme because it is simple, with hard edges in the photo that have a connection to the use of stalactites and crispness used on my  mood board and throughout the project.
